Inspiring Week Gearing Up for Our Exploratorium!

Last week, iLEAD Spring Meadows staff Christine Kunishige attended the Advanced Facilitator Development Conference (AFDC) in Denver, Colorado. Spring Meadows’ Exploratorium is an innovative learning space that will inspire learners to explore various fields of Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math (STEAM) – all major disciplines of the 21st century.
explore2In the Exploratorium, learners will engage in projects that initiate inquiry and critical thinking in the areas of STEAM. The projects, or explorations, are guided by the Exploratorium facilitator, who provides the learners with hands-on, collaborative opportunities to see and experience the application of the concepts that are being introduced. For example, learners may use K’Nex to build simple machines and then explain how they are used in every home and in the community. Or they may use Google Maps to study the geographic properties of the land surrounding the school and use that information to design an outdoor play

space with Bridge Designer or Fischertechnik. Some learners may choose to log onto Tinkercad to design figurines and a 3D printer to print and sell them to raise money for charity. Coding can be explored in Kindergarten using a Lego Maze and paper codes, early elementary using programs like Scratch to make video games, and in upper elementary using Lego EV3 Robotics or Sphero. The resources and possibilities in the Exploratorium are endless!

AFDC was an amazing opportunity to network with fellow facilitators and exchange project ideas, resources, and advice for a successful year.
